You don't need to stick to a type but you should have a theme for your gym. Make sure to include your ace and puzzle/game for your gym.

Here's one I made a while back. Not sure about any changes I would make.

idk, maybe some switches you have to press in order per room (starts with 2, then 3, then ends with 4 in the third room). Every time you press a switch out of order a NPC trainer pops out and you have to fight them. I really don't know, I'm not creative enough for a puzzle.

My team, theme is Pokemon with pointy/sharp hands. Ace is Scyther. Puzzle is cutting down trees in the right order to form a bridge (if you cut them in the wrong order it falls apart and you have to start over).

Doubles battle, strategy is mostly comprised of aurora veil and blizzardspam with fast offensive attackers mixed throughout. Ace is obviously Froslass.
Gym puzzle consists of walking through several icy rooms and solving logic puzzles. 4 spirits will talk to you through ice sculptures, one is truthful and the rest are liars. Shattering the proper one leads you to the next room, shattering the wrong one gets you into a battle.
