the entire theme is growing up. the island challenge is the mark of adulthood in alola. team skull are all people who failed or never finished the island challenge. Lilly taking the steps to move away from her mother and be her own person. The physical growing up of the legendary from baby to adult. The protaginist themselves coming of age and completeing the trials . im too tired to do a proper write up. i need to got to bed. Good night.

The story had good ideas, and tried to be somewhat more ambitious/complex than "evil person wants to awaken legendary, oh no can't control it, loses". And people don't usually say SM has a great plot, just a good one relative to the other games.
If the games had a fast forward feature I think people would be a lot more receptive to it, but I guess they'd be afraid little Timmy would fastforward through important info on where to go.

None of this is special. You challenge the gyms once you're old enough in every game as a right of passage. The evil teams are always at least somewhat misguided people in some way. Even Giovanni ended up abandoning Team Rocket after learning something from Red. Bianca and other characters like Hop also went through maturing arcs like Lillie did. Rather than the legendary, it's usually your starter or other Pokemon you get gifted by the story that matures over the course of your journey.

Yeah those thematic ideals were constantly shoved in our faces but the only time it ever went anywhere was with Lillie and even then her arc was kind of lackluster.
I honestly didn't find the amount of cutscenes/dialogue to be a problem at least as far as amount compared to other entries goes. The problem is that almost all of it outside of Lillie was ridiculously banal -even for a pokemon game

It has never been stated to be for that reason, beating the gyms is a requirement to challenge the elite four, who are a requirement to challenge the champion.

There you go. Lillie was once of the best written characters in the franchise, and her character arc was the most depth we've ever seen of a pokemon character. Nebby was one of the only box legendary that was integrated into the plot well without resorting too, "bad guy summons them" although the jelly fish did that. Guzma had an intriguing tie to Lusamine and had understandable character motives. Lusamine was good too but I don't really remember why she did the thing but I don't remember why any evil leaders do what they do besides guzma. Why are you so against praising SM? It had alot of objectively bad problems but it's writing and story was not one of them

Literally that small amount of exposition is more than in every other mainline game released to date to my knowledge. USUM explores the battle of idealism vs pragmatism between a daughter and a mother, and it takes place on an island which is trying to establish itself on the world stage through its pokemon league.

Pacing was absolute horseshit, and constantly smothering the player with cutscenes defeated my emersion and hampered my exploration, but the story on its own merit was decent. We know the characters, we understand their motivations, and the progression is logical. Where they really dropped the ball was in the presentation of the story

It had some decent attempts at characterization, but it was also the one time they tried beyond making one-dimensional cutouts that only exist to suck your dick (and even then half the Gen 7 characters still suck your dick mercilessly). And then the very next gen they went back to making garbage one-note characters/exposition dumps.

Red and Blue, which is laughable because Red and Blue barely has a story. I'd rather follow a bunch of thugs than Lillie's family drama. The biggest problem with Sun and Moon is that you're not even the main character in your own story, Lillie and her bullshit barge in for most of it.
Alos Black and White 1, even though that wasn't good either.
Like I said. The actual story of Gen 7 sucks (ESPECIALLY the Ultra Sun & Moon). It's the development and characterizations that er actually somewhat decent. I don't mind Lusamine's motivations for a villain. It's actually different from the villains that we typically got. The moment where they FUCKED UP is them trying to say in the story "herp-a-derp Lusamine was actually controlled by JellySquid the whole time because roflmao we can't have a female be too villanious). And then Ultra Sun/Moon proceeds to make her the most asinine character across the ENITRE FRANCHISE. What a shitload of fuck!

Its either this or BW. SM has better characters but BW has better plot.
Also, this franchise has low standards for writing so "best in the franchise" isn't a high bar, unless you have double standards like most of the fanbase.

This tight here explains my issue with Sun and Moons story, the story itself wasn’t the issue but rather as you mentioned the presentation, had the game presented its story better, kept the good parts of gen 6 such as the PSS (and even dexnav which could of easily been integrated into the rotom map) and also overhauled the battle royal mode to be last Pokemon standing Instead of the bullshit rule they actually went with then sun and moon could of at the very least been one of the more solid games in the series.

The story was the gym challenge. The legendary plot was actually the side story that interrupts the main plot. And even then the side plot about the legendaries is consistent throughout the story via Sonia's research through the various cities. Notice how the legendary plot and Rose's scheme locks you out of them until the end? Because the game literally tells you that's not what you were supposed to be focusing on, which is why Leon handled it all. The gym challenge was what they wanted your attention on. You can argue that sucks, but it was what they were going for.

Did you miss the part where it's explained that Team Yell are just disguised Spikemuth gym trainers trying to help Marnie win the gym challenge so that she can use the position as champion to improve Spikemuth because it's a slum?

It was basically a very blunt way of saying "Don't put off until tomorrow what you can do today". They were making use of a very famous saying. Considering all the talk about power plants and such, it had some environmentalist implications.
