I actually somewhat of a "gameplan" if i were to live in the Pokemon world and start
Zubat.
Zubat is the best Pokemon one could start out with to catch, it is easy to find and catch, and since it has absorb now instead of leech life it would probably be easier to train it in the caves with all the Geodudes and other rock types. and as it turns into Crobat it would be big enough for me to fly on it, that and it's also a very tough Pokemon.
So i catch a Zubat and train it, just keep training it, until it becomes a Golbat or just do it until Crobat, either way that'll already set me up with a reasonably strong Pokemon, i would then probably catch a Growlithe, as Arcanine seems like a really good Pokemon to have for numerous reasons, it can hunt, it can make campfires, and gives you warmth for sleeping. Then i'd just go in search of strong Pokemon like Magneton(probably doesn't need to eat) And Victrebeel, i could go Abra-hunting but that would be a very tough challenge probably.
