I always attributed his assholishness to being traded, but never considered the 2x experience aspect. It explains why only charmander evolved and not bulbasaur or squirtle

Probably was a way to represent the mechanic were traded Pokémon disobey you when they get over leveled. Charmeleon was the strongest of Ash's mons at the time, so gameplay-wise it makes all the sense in the world.
Reminder that at this point, the anime still tried referencing the games mechanics somewhat (like a random Starmie or Pikachu having levels), even with all the aim for the horn bs

Game mechanic wise it was to show that trade mons dont listen, but actual opinion wise I just think Charmeleon was feeling itself a bit too much when it evolved from charmander and that made it develop a narcissistic personality, kinda like how people who were bullied suddenly turn into bullies when they're given power. In the span of 1 evolution Charmeleon became the powerhouse of Ash's team and that made it see itself as superior to even its own trainer.

I'm surprised the anime completely forgot about the relationship between Char and Brock. It was Brock who was really concerned about him and should have become his trainer. Even if Ash catched him there was no reason not to have him and Brock interacting. I bet even at his most rebelious he would still respect Brock after how his debut episode went.

It's not like he really won most of his badges. He only really outright beat Surge, Koga, and Blaine.
