Well the word “spar” might not have been the best word to use when taking into account of its literal meaning. But the context here is mainly focused on the trainer directly training with their Pokemon partner rather than just their partner doing the training against other mons.

I find sparring with your pokemon would only be useful if I had the ability to put up an honest fight. Like if I could shoot electricity and fire from my hands and body, I would be a decent enough threat to a Pokemon to where our sparring matches actually do help the pokemon in the long run.
With powers like that, I could stand up against a Gardevoir and be an honest challenge. Training like that will forge some strong bonds and if one of us doesn't walk away with some reminder of our battle someone fucked up.

My Magmar would burn me horribly, my Obamasnow would freeze me horribly, my Shedinja would phase through everything (unless I attack with dark intent, but that would just kill it instantly), Rhydon would quickly show the folly of punching a rock with a human fist, etc
