Pokken exists on a weird middle ground where the directional specials and field phase dissuade fgc compfags while the 23 'mon roster makes the game not click with casuals even though each individual 'mon gets a lot of thought put into them.

Chandelure, Scizor, Empoleon, Garchomp, very similar to you.
And this game also made me like Decidueye a lot more. I thought his design was a little awkward before but seeing him fly around and not just shoot arrows but also scratch and kick and use ghost powers made him a lot cooler to me.

Honestly for the better. Lack of playable hitmons is worth it when we get stuff like Suicune and the ghosts working.
