Raihan’s an arab. Nessa’s an indian. Galar as a whole is implied to be the British Empire condensed into a single region, but they fucked up the biome diversity and made it a bland West European shithole with some Mediterranean beach here and island there.

their Japanese names are the only canon names

Notice how they still call the male rival in Gen1 as Blue even though he wears green outfits most of the time because his Japanese name is Green

To be fair, though he has historically worn a lot of blue, his most recent appearance in a main line game featured him wearing green pants while he stood opposite Red, who was wearing red.

That aside, that poster's point about name localization still works. A localized name isn't always an exact 1:1, so you should usually rely on their original Japanese name when you get deeper into what their names are about or where they come from.

Honestly, it's just as dumb to suggest that you can prove or disprove anyone's ethnicity. Many characters don't exactly have enough of a backstory to prove anything, but also it's probably ambiguous on purpose because the details of ethnicity don't matter all that much in an alternate world that serves as the setting for a game primarily marketed to children.

Gee, it sure is hard to tell what ethnicity Raihan is supposed to be based on just his name once you factor in that his name is different across translations. It's almost like you can't depend on that part of his character details to make any determinations about what ethnicity he is, even though his ethnicity never really mattered anyway.
