Pmd fanfiction help

Didn’t want to post this in the other fanfic thread rn because I didn’t want to highjack the thread, so I’m sorry that there’s now two fanfic threads up rn :<

I’ve been thinking about writing a story based in the pmd universe but I don’t know how I would pull this off without making it shit since I’ve never written a story before.

A basic description of the story i want to write is that it’s a slice of life about a pawniard a deino and a sableye that form a rescue team but constantly get mistaken for being bad guys despite them just wanting to help people.

My biggest problem atm is that I don’t know how to start the story without being too jarring for the readers.

OP, having written and thought through several PMD fanfics, I've got a general understanding of how to approach things.
That said, I'll need to know what you're thinking in order to help. You want to make the introduction less jarring? What were you planning to do? Maybe we can help you if we know where you were thinking of going from the start.

The obvious answer that comes to mind, is to have an intro where a pokemon is in trouble and then the protags come to rescue them. After a little action scene that gives you a feeling for their character then the pokemon that needed rescuing mistakes them for bad guys and runs off. That way you start the story with action to hook the reader, you establish a bit of the characters by showing how they operate during their jobs, you establish what a rescue team actually does and you introduce the idea that they get mistaken for bad pokemon a lot. Even if you don't do it this way, the main point is that you should try to hook in the reader. Lot of fanfics info-dumb right at the start which can throw off the readers because nobody likes learning about something they don't know if they care about yet. You should have an initial scene that is either intriguing or engaging. Explorers of Sky went the intriguing route having that one scene where it's raining and daddy Sceptile is with you. They purposely make it vague and confusing so the player is more inclined to play the game and figure out what happened. Whatever you do just make it not boring and terrible

Depends on how much world building you're willing to do. Making a new village means making a bunch of new characters, which gives you more freedom to do something interesting but if they are solely exist to replace the old ones then their is not point in that. Only make a new village if it has a clear purpose in the story, don't just make something new for it to be new when the old is the same thing.

However you want. I don't think anyone's going to get on you for having pokemon evolve without a magic fuckamagig or whatever. Although, I would treat it as a big deal and a big change for the pokemon, personality/maturity wise

Sorry but I don’t really know how to answer your question since I never really had a clear direction I wanted to begin the story on, but something like what >>44707867 said sounds like a great way to start it, but that brings about another problem, I don’t know how to write action scenes without sounding too corny, could you give me some pointers on writing action in a pmd story?

Writing action scenes in general throws off a lot of people because there are so much to handle in one go. In PMD and the mainline games, it's all about turn-per-turn, yet here you can use your environment for a fully immersive fight.

Once you have a clear view of where the fight is taking place, you can imagine how the characters will fight in that area. Will they hide? Will they use objects/rocks/whatever lying around? Will they ricochet the enemy into something? It's a lot to think about, but once you have these elements in, you can make a good fight scene

No matter what you do, you're bound to have some corniness into your story, but there's a lot of charm you can get from that. Try using pastebin and show it off on the /vpwt/ once it will be back up

I can't really offer much advice how you should write but I will say this.

Just do it.

Try something, if you don't like it try something else. No one is good at something when they're just starting out and we all need to start out at some point.

Write something, try to get feedback on it and write something more. You will get better at it the longer you practice.

If you need inspiration, look at what others have done and try to do the same yourself. If you don't feel comfortable writing something long write something short. Try a bunch of different approaches, first person, third person. See what happens if you start the story at different times or what happens when you add more/less description.

There are as many ways to write as there are writer and none of them are wrong. Read guides on writing and try out what they tell you. If something works for you then keep doing it. If it doesn't then stop and try something else.

Action is pretty difficult. The way the pokemon anime does it is probably the best way to do it. You have a pokemon do a move, then describe what it actually does and then the opponent responds to the move. For example

Something like that but good. You can make it sound more natural by being creative with what moves do. You can take liberties, not every attack has to be a beam of some sort. For example stealth rock wouldn't make sense in the context of a real time battle, so you can change it. Stealth rock in the anime is a trap that hurls invisible rocks at you if you fall in into it. This makes the fights more interesting as instead of it being throwing moves at each other theirs actual strategy evolved that the protags must overcome, probably introducing a counter strategy. It makes the battle feel more meaningful rather then just overpowering your foe.
