There's a big problem with grass/fire, grass/water and water/fire regular pokemon
The only non legendary with this is ludicolo, and the problem with it was that if the player doesn't pick blaziken, or box their starter, they will likely not use that pokemon in their playthroughs. Monotype players are a minority and gamefreak will never take them into account. I suspect this is the reaseon that holds these type combinations back.

The game doesn't expect you to repeat too much types, not many players care if they have having 2 ground types. But having a repeated type does not give the player many advantadges, and gamefreak would not want to make a popular grass/fire and make the game "hard" for everyone that had it along a fire or grass starter. I want a these type combinations but i don't have much faith in gf

I’m fairly certain 95% of casual players use a fire type, a water type, a grass type, the regional bird, a dragon, and a wildcard spot to eventually be replaced by the box legendary. I think it’s a valid point

It makes plenty of sense. There are multiple species of trees/plants which rely on fire in their life cycle. There's also the most common depiction of the typing being hot peppers of some kind which also makes sense.
