What I don't understand is why don't they just take the best of both worlds?
Let's assume both games are shit, regardless of sales, how hard is it to literally just take the best of both worlds for assets that already exist and end up with a better product that will net you even more sales?
This is the same problem I have with Sword and Shield. I bought it and thought they were okay but they've shown they clearly have everything in the game necessary to make things scale according to badges. They took the route and put in MORE EFFORT to make shit linear as fuck when they could have at least made the first three gyms able to be done in any order and have an infinitely better result. There's no excuse for the wild area to only connect to two towns with one of them being timelocked.
