The games are stale or shit because they're constantly working on the next step so they don't bother putting out perfected fully explored products. The question is when it will plateau, because that may be the next resurgence of quality games.

Oh gee, it's almost like they make Pokemon on a schedule so that they can regularly have material to base new merch and media on or something. They will not pump the brakes to start polishing at any point. Not a damn thing will change until the gravy train visibly starts to derail.

It has nothing to do with pumping the brakes, it has to do with being well-accustomed with the system that Nintendo settles on and already having a bunch of reusable assets instead of having to quickly make barren-looking settings for the new system. It's the same reason the Isle of Armor looks visually better than the base game.

The issue is expecting a game with polish and a blatant gap between iterations with inflexible 3-year cycles is a fool's game. Even Call of Duty has two teams so one can take a break for a release so some sort of new ideas are churned out.

Go look at any franchise that has a less predictable release cycle and you'll notice jumps between each game compared to Pokemon's gens.
