Lance=Power; Lance is the Champ and the strongest trainer barring Red for the majority of the game. Lance also actively projects his power by spanking Team Rocket whenever he finds them, something that only the Player and Silver are seen doing (who are also the only trainers of comparable skill to Lance by the endgame).
The Elder=Wisdom; The Elder can get people to change their view, not by backing it up with power, but by making people reconsider their actions. He convinces Clair she's being unfair and in the postgame oversees the battles where you team up with Silver to battle Lance and Clair, possibly hinting that he influenced Silver to be less of a jackass.
