How much of Gold 97 is sourced from the leaks and how much is just using GSC to fill in the gaps or just fabricated? Obviously the map design and Pokemon designs are from the beta. I'm mostly wondering about events and dialog.

For example your mom gives you the whole speech about the pokegear 1:1 from release GSC and I'm wondering if that's just using bits of the retail game to fill in the gap or if the japanese dialog went unedited between the beta and release.
Similarly I'm wondering about beta Silver and if this was an actual conceived personality for him, or if the 5 tower challenge was actually going to be in the game at some point or if this is all fabricated by the romhacks creator.

Romhack is great and I won't really care if it's a lot of filling in gaps to make the map and pokedex into an actual game, I'm just curious about the creative process.

Also Farfetch'd is fucking BROKEN in this game he absolutely shits on Pidgey and Spearow and Hoothoot

For beta designs some that I thought look nice I've tried to make into alternate forms of Pokemon.

This is one for Lanturn, it's native to colder arctic waters as opposed to the warmer waters normal Lanturn are. Due to the reflective ice, its eyes have grown smaller, so its own lights don't blind itself. This Pokemon has some blubber around its body, but not to help keep it warm, but rather due to the scarcity of food in Northern Waters, which encourages these Lanturn to move infrequently and store food to help last periods of time.

It trades Volt Absorb for Thick Fat.

Anyone know how to get Twilight Menu ++ to run a GBA game with RTC?

I implemented ShinyQuagsire's Day/Night patch on my Firered game and the RTC works on VisualBoyAdvance but not on TwilightMenu++. Any guidance would be appreciated as the ability to play on my DS was the whole point...

If it's a Gen 2 hack, just go with the max of 253. You've nothing to lose.

For type distribution, in general aim for at least 6 Fully Evolved Pokemon of each type as your minimum, with at least one of those being a pure type (bar Flying since that seems to be the exception). From there, focus on filling out gaps. First, think about the fact that some types are supposed to be common, and others supposed to be rare. Water, Flying, and Normal tend to be common, and Steel, Ghost, and Dragon rare. A lot of romhacks include the rarer types everywhere because they're cool, but you'll tend to want to avoid that.

To help with type distribution, make a spreadsheet. A column for each type, and in each column 3 sub-columns, one listing pure types, one listing dual types (either their dual type listed in parenthesis), and the third column listing all of the Fully Evolved Pokemon, dual and pure type. This is immensely help you to see which types are bountiful and which can benefit from being filled out, and help you notice type combos you might want.

make sure you have a solid foundation for what kind of biomes your region has, then go through the pokedex real slowly, write down (or save images into a folder of) every pokemon that could realistically fit into that region, then whittle them down

imo don't worry about maintaining series constants just for the sake of it (bird, rodent, pikachu clone, fossil, etc) worry more about making each area feel genuinely lived in by the animals.

cut mons that overlap too much (you don't need all 7 of those fishes just because they all could fit, you don't need all 3 mushroom pokemon etc), if you get really low and still have too many, start looking at roles they fill, do you have a ton of special fire mons but only one physical, don't get rid of the physical for instance

lastly, don't be afraid to fuck with cannon evolution families. do you really need to include all 8 eeveelutions? maybe you want beautifly but not dustox, fuck it who cares.

Well that all depends, You can influence things like depriving the player of rock types whine flying or fire pokemon are everywhere so something as mundane as a Nosepass might become a star team member just because of its type. It's all about what kind of environment you want to create.

mentioned is what I'm thinking of, but I don't see where things like dragon would fit in, or if I don't have an especially fire/ice centric area in mind how that could naturally fit in. Honestly they'd probably fit in the countryside to diversify that portion of the region but I don't want it to be too... I dunno, messy. That's an interesting point to fuck with evolution lines though. That's a very interesting suggestion that I might consider if anyone with branches (or maybe Electabuzz is the max, just an example) would make sense for an area.

this is a great point as well, so many people probably fell in love with mankey or nidoran because they got fighting moves before fighting brock

in that same line of thinking, using gen 1 as an example, making mons available as they might be needed (mankey before brock, oddish/bellsprout before misty, diglett before surge) can be a useful way to endear mons to the player that they otherwise don't use in their pokemon runs

True. Kanto was what I was thinking because it has TERRIBLE type distribution (obscene amount of poison, handful of psychic lines, one ghost line, one dragon line, barely any fire, barely any ice, I could continue) but it positions what it does have REALLY well. So region design, gym leaders, and pokedex are all kind of tasks that need to be done together. I was hesitant to start different things because honestly I didn't know which was more important to do first. Here's a question: thoughts on Pokemon used by enemy trainers that aren't available?
For example a rival trainer who spent time in another region, maybe he has some Pokemon unavailable to obtain in this one, is that considered annoying? I'm using Essentials if that matters, I'm imagining you can't do that in actual hacks but I at least have experience using RPG Maker so I'm opting to use that instead

Yes. Pokemon's whole gimmick is team building. If you want to have Pokemon other trainers use and the player can't until post-game, fine. But don't have ones that the Player just can never have.

i would say for me at least, designing the region first has been the best way to start

if you've got a really good story thread, or have a bunch of unique locations you want to make, build your region around those, and then let those places or story beats inform who your gym leaders are, what your towns look like, or what mons live in your region

I find that when you've got a solid idea, it builds things around itself, and each little thing you add helps build the next.

say you have a cool idea for a temple, then you think about how its positioned, realize that it would make sense for it to be surrounded by a lake, then you think how would that lake have formed, well its in a valley now, then with that you start planning pokemon who would live there, then the pokemon available and the location inform the town that might be nearby and the gym leader etc

for my money that seems fine as long as its not over blown to the point where you're constantly faced with stuff you can't get, your rival having a starter that's unavailable to you is fine, i think it makes their team unique, but if every gym leader does or something that sucks. it can also be a cool payoff in the late/post game, say your rival gives you an egg of said pokemon

Interesting... Yeah, that uh, Disney World monument thing would probably be an even better place to start. Figure out locations, form them into a world, and then build around it. Shit even that valley idea gave me ideas for what pokemon would be there. A good mix of grass, bug, water, rock, ground, that'd be a really beautiful area to go through. Fuck. Thanks.
And yeah that egg idea is good. I honestly didn't have a plan for much post game but opening up the available mons a little more would be good if I decide to go that route.

post game is kind of a weird place for fan games, since there's no official online multi or anything, there's not any real incentive to keep playing unless you have some post game story beats to hit.

your only options to give a player something to do outside of story if they are looking for it is open up the available mons or have a battle facility, i wouldn't say those are needed, but they can be fun to have

I think platinum does this really well, a new island with new closing story beats, new monsters and a battle facility to do, again not needed but fun

Imo each type should have a minimum of strong Pokemon lines. I go for +6, but this may be too much for your Pokedex size and you may should go for 4-5 strong lines. Id would also try to pick a lot of unique dual types. You should also design your enemy teams before filling the Pokedex. After creating enemy teams and choosing strong Pokemon for each line, look at your region and pick fitting Pokemon.

Just so long as you already looked into the pros and cons of Essentials VS roms.

The short version is that you have more coding freedom, but they will often have unstable frame rates.

Why is Flying the exception, btw? What is stopping GF from simply releasing more pure Flying-type mons, even a full family? Of course hacks can do better (Fool's Gold's Wooper and Quagsire were a nice surprise). I wouldn't mind seeing a regional variant of a Normal/Flying bird family (say, Pidgey) that is pure Flying-type.

Because the idea behind it was that nothing was "purely" a Flying creature. It's a really weird take on the concept of an Air elemental. Tornadus was sorta meant to symbolize that by being the first purely air Pokemon.

Then they just sorta completely gave up on it in Gen 8.

Enemy teams will be important too, yeah, but my plan was to have one of them the Pokemon League, so that one would kind of be tied closely to a portion of the gym leaders. There's definitely other factions or groups to consider. Especially so they don't just become the normal poison like so many have been.

Anyone know of any existing non-gym Pokemon romhacks or fangames?
The romhacks I remember are HarvestCraft, VR Missions, Nameless (the island survival thing, or maybe I'm mixing it up with Castaway), and the holiday stuff.
The fangames were gamejam creations like running a Pokemon Daycare, the time-travel adventure where you're a detective being fucked over by Celebi, or the Mew game where you're trying to sneak around Rocket.

There's two Gym Leader games. Gym Trainer Simulator and This Gym of Mine. I forget which was the better one. While it technically is a gym romhack/fangame, it is from the other side of things rather than running around doing a Pokemon Standard Adventure.
And since you're interested if I remember right the other two fangames I mentioned are Circular Logic and MewYou.
There's other work/sim games like PokeFriend Cafe, EXam, Academy Life.
Puzzle-focused stuff like Unown Ruins and VR Missions.
Pocket Gaiden 1 and 2. A bit of a mindfuck in the form of Naillevaihcam. Battle Factory for GBC.
Horrorish adventures like Experimental Gameplay, Secret of Cinnabar Island.
Other adventures: Attack on Silph Co, Attack on the Space Station.

You're an archeologist student who's helping your teacher out as a gofer when the ground gives way in an ancient ruined temple. Most of the game is spent trying to get back to the surface and staying alive. There could be a few spots where you can tap into the wifi signal from the base where your teacher contacts you and sends you a couple helpful items. Or at least you could access his PC stock. Then there's this thing after getting out with protecting the artifact found from thieves.

v18 boosted Essential's performance by a good amount, plus you can actually set the base framerate to actually go to 60 now.
so while the performance isn't perfect, its not as much of a con as it was before.

pangeanon here, reposting from last thread since it died before i got any responses

got some map work done, this is starting off some work I did about a year ago while i was between jobs that i had dropped until this last week during quarantine, so some of you might recognise this from that old posting.

anyway, this is east island, the air themed island and where the player starts.

Center right tucked into the mountains is a small fishing village, your hometown, the small holes all over are supposed to be wingull nests, I know it looks weird in map form but im gonna fill them with wingull sprites, look up seagull cliff nests to get what i mean.

directly east is the first route, small beach route, going to have a surfable and divable area to the east, south is the professor's lab, taking the cave at the north at first can lead directly north to the major port city, later with hms can lead west to that small lake.

port city has hotel next to docks, couple houses, town monument to island spirit, some warehouses, and the gym looking building is gonna be a power station, this region wont have standard gyms but each island will have a power station.

east of port town is valley route, north up the waterfalls will be ruins and access to the island spirit pokemon, south up the mountains is what im working on now, will be a winding path along the mountaintops leader to another town

everything here is very much wip, so if you see any obvious mistakes in blank areas ignore them, ones in more finished areas please point them out, any critique about layout so far please as well.

I still need to make sprites for the different stair directions so ignore that, mainly im looking for map flow critique rather than graphic nitpicks, for instance the valley feels off to me, so any help with that or anything else, also again please don't just trash the wingull nests, that kept happening last time, i get it looks weird, it's just a concept stage, thanks for any time

Trying to come up with a gym based around the move Spite. The idea is through a mix of pressure and spite the leader drains your PP forcing you to struggle yourself to death. Is that possible? Fully randomized mon focused mainly on "freshly hatched" with a randomized set of Egg Moves, route typical level treated as having either evolved or caught as-is, or a level 50 form with a randomized mix of learned TMs and higher level attacks.
Daily limits on trading based on badges.
0 badges: 1 trade, odds are geared mostly towards Route 1 mons of any region with anything else at increasingly improbable odds.
1 badge: 3 trades, odds include just past the first forest and Old Rod.
2 badges: 5 trades, First underground...
Ect and so on until 8 badges which has unlocked trading and the odds include a rare chance of a Starter, Legendary, or a Regional Variation.
No matter what you also have a 1% chance of a Shiny so there is an incredibly rare chance of a Shiny Legendary.
Essentially Wondertrade would actually be Gacha without having to waste money or items on tickets.

new revisions this morning, lots of minor work on the right side, haven't moved to the left end yet.

Took one building out of cliff fishing village cuz its supposed to be a smaller town, added more planters in its place, might remove another building, added some more little water puddles for colour.

cleaned up the cliff slope on the beach to make it look more natural, extended the slope of the cliff in the port city as well for the same reason.

Added a small loading/unloading area to fill out the space on the left entrance of the city, since the idea is that goods are unloaded at port and taken through the valley either to the other end of the island or up the mountainside, cleaned up some stuff by the bridges and the riverside house.

I'm thinking of messing with the river flow some in the middle and adding a second bridge crossing just to break up that long section where its just a straight dirt path.

Also just for pacing keep in mind all of this is minus any items or trainers which will help fill out some of the blank areas.

it's just one of the thematic ideas I had going into the designing of the region, I think a more apt name would be dinotopianon honesty

the inspiration I took from pangea was that this region in cannon would be where the center of poke pangea used to be, and the rest of the continents drifted off from this point on the globe, giving a bullshit reason for why the islands pokemon would be closer to their ancient selves, which is why i've got fossil mons still running around and gives an excuse for changing families and types and stats

This is a sketch for my region map. Each circle is a big city that is connected to the train service. The big cities connect to smaller cities not connected to the train service, not visible here. The game is semi open world and you can visit the big cities immediately, but the smaller cities and routes may be only avaiable after you have a certain amount of badges.
There are 5 badges - one in each area - and you can visit them in any order.

a few of your stair tiles are misplaced. some are just in the wrong direction, others are inconsistent (you seem to stick to the 'stairs are on the ridge' like the games do, but elsewhere put an extra stairs on the upper ledge).
not sure why the water path from the cave in that valley is blocked from reaching the area on the upper right.
puddle placement could probably be a bit more natural or frequent, or maybe removed altogether, not sure why they're there to begin with.
other than that looks really cool.

The cave is an exit from another entrance on the other side of the mountain, I just didn't include the rest to save file space, see the previous posts to get the rest of the area

I'll mess around with the puddles, I put them in partly to break up the colour and partly to show off the cloud reflections, this is the air island so I wanted the player to see the clouds for aesthetic

I know it seems unnatural, but inaccessible areas should avoid having walkable space as much as possible--it can be confusing/annoying if you're lost and now have to really focus on where you can/can't go. Also I'd recommend blocking off the long paths that are dead ends, for the same reason as before.
It's easy to follow when you're looking at it in an overhead view, but not in game when you don't know the full layout. Unless it's a dungeon, people don't want to get lost and forget which way is up.

I'm back! Been working all day to make a map, gyms, and interesting biomes and setpieces and a pokedex to fill it out, and I think it's done. I think it's a little ground and steel focused, but the second half of the region takes place in mountains and deserts, so it kinda fits. Hopefully it has a good spread though. I was more focused on types and location though, less on "Do I have too many physical fires or special waters," so gameplay wise it'll probably still need fixing. Hit about 200 mons though, so I'm happy.

This is complete bullshit. Small inaccessible areas looking like roads and inhabited places make maps appear bigger and more livley than they actually are. That's why FRLG and HGSS maps where everything is surrounded by thick woods look like a joke.
See Pallet Town (RGBY), the pond behind Cherrygrove City PC (GSC, actually turned into an accessible area in HGSS), Goldenrod City and Olivine City, Route 38 (all GSC) and many others.

The dialogue in the beta only goes up to Old City or so. The rest is generally fabricated stuff either extrapolated from NPCs standing around in cities (Giovanni in the radio tower), unused NPC sprites in the data (Imposter Oak) or reused from GSC (Clair and Dragon's Den in Sugar. It's likely the mines were actually supposed to be there due to the famous Sado mines).

We know that there was a tower with 5 floors in Old City (which is Violet+Ecruteak) that was pretty much guaranteed to house Ho-oh due to magazines mentioning it, so making it a mix of Sprout Tower and Tin Tower made the most sense. Later information from other old magazines suggest that Kimono Girls with dancing Jynx may have been involved in summoning Ho-oh, though. This may also be why HGSS added the Kimono Girls to the box legendary side quest.

yeah, every time I do changes I run around in rom to see them, it really helps with little things i missed or to feel out if an area ended up too small or too big, maybe it's just cuz im the creator but it really doesn't read like a maze to me, there actually isn't any way possible for the player to get lost, the path only has 2 spots where it deviates, the two bridges, and both are very easy to fully see and are both dead ends

I took a bunch of screenshots in rom, please ignore the random items and trainers, i haven't messed with the events yet so those are leftovers from what i overwrote

I did a quick highlight of the path, red is the main path which is easy to see in game via the ground patterns, the purple is any possible deviations from the path. everything else up top is inaccessible to the player, does it look too zig zaggy or chaotic?

None of it seems purposeful. The while point of the "sea of trees" and clumps of grass, is that it's easier for the eye to rest and not have to scan the screens in smaller chunks. These are exhausting to look at, and I dont feel any identity in area variation with these.
..sorry, I'm sure you've put hard work into this but it really doesnt look good.

clarifying question, does this only apply to the inaccessible areas or should I also just simplify and block out the the path too? for instance, don't bother putting tall grass along the side of the path, just save it for patches?

I'm playing through Green at the moment, I'd like to nuzlocke all 4 of the gen 1 games. I don't have a Yellow save at the moment because I knew I'd run into issues with not being able to evolve Pikachu. the thing is that, you can have small inaccessible areas with a bit of grass and flowers to make the whole thing less rigid, but to be able to make it work it needs to be obvious that you can't reach it, when standing close to it you need to see the 4 walls around it

To clarify, using XSE with Firered, I have a random trainer battle. The player can battle any one of three trainers upon talking to an NPC.

But sometimes (like 1/5 of the time?) talking to the NPC won't trigger any battle at all. If I talk to them again (or a third time), the battle will start.

Really scratching my head at this...

Thanks for the feedback. I suspect the problem comes from there being a second random gen with a different range (so after the fight, the NPC will give you one of five items). Perhaps the lastresult (800D) is somehow left over?

basically the story will get you on three different island that got closer together because of earthquakes and you're asked to help your island get in contact with the others
because they were originally far appart, each island have their own specific list of pokemons and because of that, you can find different forms of the same pokemon on two different islands
like how on the Wet Island you can find normal Galvantula but the Cold Island's Galvantulas happen to be ice type instead of electric type

aside from that, what's with the random blank space on wet bottom right, and why does cold have less than the other two?

also speaking of cold, I don't know your whole geography, but some of those mons don't really fit that climate to me, altaria feels more like a spring song bird, Nidos also feel more warm savannah

also back to regional formes, I see that Donphan and Galvantula are both available normally on other islands or regionally on cold island, but machoke and shuppet aren't available normally on the other islands, feels inconsistent

okay, that makes sense for some mons like diggersby, Sawk, Throh (construction), weezing (polution), porygon etc
I don't know what kind of number limit you have in mind but things like Magnezone (industry) or Stoutland/Furfrou (domestic long fur dogs) might fit that area, unless you're full or intentionally have cold with less mons

what are you're regional mon ideas? you mentioned ice galvantula which sounds cool as fuck, but what about Donphan? Is it ice? if so how is it different from Mamoswine?

Possibly, but only for 4th gen. 3rd gen has been explored to hell and back, so at this point, the Emerald source code leak offers next to nothing for rom hacks, or at least that's how I understand it. The 4th gen leak is promising, but it will be a while before we see any fruits come from that and even if the tools got better today, we are at least 2 years away from a golden age since making the hacks takes time.

Gens 1-3 were already disassembled/decompiled. Dp source can be quite useful but it's a bit harder to use since everyone is hacking hgss or platinum instead of dp.
I'm calling the leaks irrelevant because I don't see them having a massive influence over current or upcoming hacks.

From my experience with gen 2 games the success is calculated after you throw the ball so you're probably good to go. It should be easy to check by seeing if the amount of times the ball shakes is different between tries.

The grass and tree palettes need some tweaking but it looks nice and pleasant. I'd use ledges where the dead ends are myself just to make it easier to backtrack. I'd also clear the rock in front of the leftmost stairs just because minor obstructions like that can get annoying.

You could try using mingw, but it's probably not going to be any easier. You would still to install the devkitpro using the same instructions provided (with maybe some extra troubleshooting because mingw can be weird sometimes).
You could also try installing an actual Linux distribution on your machine (as a dual boot, or in a virtual machine) but if you found the WSL install instructions too much trouble that's for sure going to be even worse.

Pros of romhacks
-generally more understood and have a lot more support/resources
-generally run better (though there have been a lot of innovations in essentials recently to get around this)
-can be played on an actual handheld unlike fangames which are pc only

Pros of fangames
-Can do a lot of things romhacks just can't, designwise
-much easier to get into than romhacks

Fangames give you freeform ability to make anything you can imagine in the Pokemon setting. You're not restricted to just Gym Adventures either (although you do get a few nongym romhacks too).

Fangames can get rather excessive in size because you'll need a fuckton more space for individual sprites and tilesets and sound files. Romhacks generally are a lot smaller.
But Fangames let you have all the Pokemon with their forms, shinies, and even new variations including a full set of Shadow mons.

It happens in a lot of hacks, but the one that's got me seething at the moment is double emerald. I like the idea of an all double battle pokemon game, and I was having fun when I actually got to the gym leaders, but the gaps between them were fucking massive. Brawly's ace was like 22, Watson jumped up to 33, and then Flannery was fucking 47.
Unlike games like Renegade Platinum or Blazed Glazed, there's nothing to make the leveling process faster. You're just supposed to kill numels for two days straight so you can have a chance to not get obliterated by Flannery's sun team. The description claimed this was to make the game more "challenging" but all it did was turn me off the idea of playing it anymore.

Your only real choice is between Firered and Emerald, disregard the other games. And it depends on what you're doing, for binary hacks Firered is by far the easiest thanks to the glut of documentation, resources and tools available. For decomps Emerald is the one with better documentation whereas you'll find very little information on Firered.
