What he saw from it was that the anime would have no substance in it. He wanted the anime to be something that parents who were watching with their kids could find things to enjoy as well and that Pokemon could grow along with its audience. There's a blog post where he talks about how absolutely miserable he felt after talking to one of the producer during the time the Lugia movie was in production. He was frustrated because Ash and friends were not doing much of anything in the Orange Islands while they waited for Gold and Silver to be finished so he asked how much longer will the anime go on for, and the producer said "at least 10 years".
