I paralyzed it then spammed bite. Pretty hard to make it through 2 chances of not moving, and my croconaw was very bulky, presumably a high dv plus the fact that I grinded on rock types primarily. I wasn't overleveled, all I had was skiploom at level 18 and a crononaw at level 21 everything else was sub level 15 and so was pretty useless. I was already 11 by the time I played gold (which was 2002 actually) so I had more of a mind for strategy than the average pokemon player back then who were like 5-9

I don’t remember that was like 20 years ago. On my recent crystal playthrough I used poison and stalling though. I’d got Tyrogue from the odd egg, but didn’t get much use out of it in the fight since it was still too low to know any fighting moves.

If I recall I had Bayleef, Geodude Slowpoke, Drowzee, Pineco and Fearow at that point with Beedrill as my Cutmon
Heck my cousin had the Pokemon guide so by the time I got to pryce I realized I could breed pin missile into Pineco and considering my Pineco was female and Beedrill male I actually went and did it, I felt like a fucking champ using an egg move Foretress even if the move sucks ass by any standards
By the end if the game I had Meganium, Rapidash(shiny), Slowking(traded back with my cousin), Foretress, Dodrio and Golem

Jesus I honestly forgot how comfy Johto is when you have a friend to trade stuff with and battle after every gym.

They have access to Smokescreen though. You can make Rollout useless by the time it does enough damage to break you.

I went to Bellsprout Tower to get a Ghastly, who knew Hypnosis.
It took like 6 or 7 tries, but I finally managed to put Miltank to sleep before its rollout killed Ghastly and keep it asleep until its death. This was my first Pokémon Game.

In a second run, when I had learnt the game better, I used Destiny Knot as held item for my most defensive Pokémon, so Attract now affected Miltank too. That interrupted its Rollout enough to prevent it accumulating power and always did minimal damage. That was a more successful strategy and I was tremendously proud of it.
