Is it weird that I always group Gens 3 and 4 together?
They almost feel like the "same" generation to me

Gen 2 kept everything Gen 1 had and either expanded it or had its own version of it. Same thing with 3->4. For example 4 has its own version of contests and secret bases, and it keeps the vs seeker and berry planting mechanics. Meanwhile gen 5 removed these things so it could do its own thing.

Gens 1 and 2 were direct sequels of each other.
While Gens 3 and 4 aren't *direct* sequels, they're still sequels that reference and have a symbiotic relationship with one another.
Similarly, 1 and 3 are close because 1 was remade in 3's engine. Meanwhile 2 and 4 have a special relationship because 2 was remade in 4's engine.
Back then, everything was defined by "patterns" even though there wasn't really any precedent for them. It was a little bit of the former and a little bit of what >>44753104 said.
Gen 5 was the only gen to really strip the formula down to it's essentials. That said, it did good on doing so and as a result I'd say Gen 5 and 6 are the most streamlined games to date. However, they still lack a lot of the extra content that made 3/4 worthwhile.

They're the only gens so far to have the exact same number and types of games (2 main games, 1 3rd version, 2 remakes). Not counting 1 and 2 since technically Gen 1 had 4 games in Japan.

The ease of transfer between them and the faux-pattern created by having chronologically-connected remakes can definetely tempt one to feel that way. Even having Genius Sonority developed home console counterparts as well just as 1-2 had the HAL games.

Second off, generation 3 and 4 were supposedly both planned immediately after gen 2, so it makes sense that if they were both planned in tandem then they would be vary similar. It really is like the same sorta thing as gen 1 and 2, they clearly saw gen 3 as something to build off of.
gen 1 and 3 also canonically take place at the same time as does 2 and 4

This is how I divide it up in my mind anyway
>Classic continuity has that rough watercolor look, the most grounded of the 3 continuities, images of the 90s and Pokemon plastered all over every cereal, poptart, billboard, and ad space flood into the minds of those who experienced it. Way before specifics had been ironed out so you get things like real animals in the anime and manga, goofy looking RGB sprites, more explicit illusions to Pokemon death, etc. A sense of mystery and wonder that the other eras don't have. The height of Pokemon as a multimedia franchise.
>Core continuity is the one pretty much everyone is the most familiar with (even most genwunners will think of this point in the series' interpretation of Kanto and kantomons above anything else). Everything has been ironed out as far as the series look and feel and is now used to create a move cohesive image of the world of Pokemon within the players eyes. Games reference each other, there are carryover elements like the regis to gen 4 to get regigigas. As an added bonus the first 5 generations all have a core continuity interpretation. Pushing further the idea that this is the "true" pokemon games in a lot of fans eyes. The height of Pokemon as a games franchise.
>Nu continuity: Shonenshit special forms and super moves abound. Any attempt at a cohesive world has been thrown out the window in favor of making the new region and new pokemon and new special mechanics look the coolest shit ever for the 1 generation they are going to be around for before getting the shitcan. Aesthetics have been replaced with cute waifus and lots of colors exploding everywhere. Introduced the concept of a multiverse because there was no other way to make cramming in all these dumb per gen mechanics work. The dark age of the franchise we may never escape from.

I agree except I would put BW/B2W2 in its own category called 'flux continuity' because Gen V started a lot of things that became the norm in the Nu continuity, while being in the same spirit and style as the 'core continuity'

Even Gen 3 was essentially a reboot, much more than Gen 5. BW while doing their own thing, did in the end allow for continuity with R/S/E/FR/LG/D/P/Pt/HG/SS in terms of transferring monsters, and BW2 added in a lot of National monsters to catch; compare to Gen 3 losing connectivity for both hardware AND software reasons, immediately going out of the way to remake Red and Green, and then having infinite forwards compatibility.
BW are standalone, but RS are isolated.

This however I'd be inclined to put XY into both Nu and Core. As I have been playing an X Nuzlocke recently, I see that XY do try and reference previous games and such while trying to bring new things to the table. Mega Evolution itself was actually propped up as a rather mysterious and unknown aspect in the world and the only major knowledge of it is that some Pokemon have transformations and it has to be done with special stones. Along with that, the way that the Fairy type was mentioned in the game had it as a newly discovered type, hinting that it was meant to be a follow up to Gen V as well, giving it a layer that it did attempt to fit into the Core continuity in terms of lore. However ORAS and how it handles Megas fucks about with how XY painted Megas as incredibly mysterious and relatively unknown, to the point that only a select few trainers in the region properly held the means of using such power. Meanwhile it seems like Megas got a bit too normalized-ish in ORAS, though my memories on the games is a bit foggy since I haven't played them in around a couple years.

Fucking ORAS. Those games also introduced the multiverse, which I suppose is supposed to handwoven away the continuity problems with Mega evolution being present in Hoenn. But they could've at least been decent games.

I don't really hate ORAS per say, I think they as games are better than RS but below Emerald in quality, but yeah, they do have some continuity and lore stuff which makes me scratch my head a bit, especially when they paint Rayquaza as the first mega when that has quite a bit of disconnect from the Great War which supposedly created Mega Stones in Kalos. And it's not like XY itself is innocent as well, since while they do try and bring some mystery and such to the concept of Mega Evolution as well as with continuity, they also themselves have some confusing design choices and lore themselves. For example, the Tower of Mastery in Shalour City has a giant on model statue of Mega Lucario when there's an implication that Mega Evolution is mysterious and unknown (although there's a tentative pass given it's where the "Mega Evolution Guru" lives. Btw what's the shtick with that?) and now even thinking about it, Laverre City's Gym doesn't make too much sense if Fairy was only a recently discovered typing. There's no implication that Valerie's a new gym leader, and under a recognition that there's no Fairy type recognized before, what type would she or some other gym leader represent?

I'm always surprised by how many things from gen 3 kept, contests, the bikes, secret bases, the vs seeker, lots of trainer classes the same berry growing system, the battle frontier. It was the last gen that did that, fuck gamefreak and their jew tactic of dropping features to avoid making old games obsolete
