While Gens 3 and 4 aren't *direct* sequels, they're still sequels that reference and have a symbiotic relationship with one another.
Similarly, 1 and 3 are close because 1 was remade in 3's engine. Meanwhile 2 and 4 have a special relationship because 2 was remade in 4's engine.

Gen 5 was the only gen to really strip the formula down to it's essentials. That said, it did good on doing so and as a result I'd say Gen 5 and 6 are the most streamlined games to date. However, they still lack a lot of the extra content that made 3/4 worthwhile.
