Yes. The manga is fond of weird stuff like that. I guess the manga author thinks it makes the characters unique, although honestly it didn't fit Hilda at all. Design-wise, it would've been better for Serena.

I would've gone with Pokemon freeter/freelancer instead. Teenagers that do odd jobs with their Pokemon. Use them to sniff out lost items etc. That way it fits with being a teenager better.
