How the fuck do I navigate this game? I've played FRLG so many times I thought I could play easily without being able to read but this is hard, even changing the settings to "set" is tricky. Do you guys have any tips for playing on japanese?

Not that anon, but I bought a Japanese copy earlier this year myself entirely because it was cheap. Converting it to USD, I think I paid about $30 for it, complete in box with manual + wireless adapter. I mostly needed it to get Slowpoke line for my Pokedex in Emerald, but still it was well worth the purchase and I've played through it a couple times already.

Download a translate app on your phone. Most of them let you take a picture and they'll auto-detect any text and translate it.
Getting all the settings right was one of the hardest things for me to do too, don't dwell on it too much. It's much easier from here.
For attacks you can just look up the moveset or look at the power/accuracy and figure out what it is.
If you're autistic enough to import a Japanese copy then hopefully you should also be autistic enough to know the jist of what's happening even if you can't understand what it's saying. If not you can always look up a guide.

I've been playing fire red in Japanese. I'm an N5 can can read hiragana, katakana and know about 200 kanji. I set the left the text speed at medium and have been getting by. A lot of it is just my familiarity with the series and kanto but when read long strings that I have no idea what the fuck they mean I just go on jishio

I made this mistake years ago when my local GameStop inexplicably had a Japanese Gold Version in the used case. I had played Gen 2 countless times and figured I could make it through, but holy shit it's a pain in the ass to battle in kana.
At the time I hadn't been through the games in some time, so I knew the map but that was really it. Items were totally lost on me and I literally had to figure out what move was what by using it and recognizing the animation. In the end I picked up 0 Japanese and found out I couldn't trade with my US Silver.
