The things that Gen VI did well, it did better than any other game in the series
through Gen VII, haven't played Gen VIII which makes it all the more maddening that everything else is absolute bottom tier. X and Y introduced some of my favorite Pokemon in the franchise. Mega Evolution is far and away my favorite battle gimmick. Some of the environments are the only things in the series I would call genuinely beautiful. The stretch of the game between Viola and Grant is probably my favorite part of any playthrough of any Pokemon game. The online system is fantastic... I could go on. I really do love Kalos.
And yet.
Holy shit, XY didn't drop the ball. It fucking shot the ball out of a particle accelerator straight to the center of the Earth. Even by Pokemon standards, the plot and characters are ridiculously bad. Every other segment of the game after earn your second badge feels like a soulless slog. The only difficulty is in not slipping into a boredom-induced coma. Lumiose City, the fucking flagship of the region, is a pain to navigate and could literally eat your save on launch. Every interesting idea that the region had, like a customizable Safari Zone or Inverse Battles, died in notFrance. The distribution of Megas was far too safe. The fucking Power Plant and the fucking desert around it. Again, I could go on. No other region infuriates me like Kalos does. Every time I want to try and start up a playthrough with my favorites, I remember that the game that they're stuck in sucks donkey dick and I go back to a DS era game instead. Gen VI needed Zygarde's game like a fireman needs water, yet instead of redeeming the region the Order Pokemon took a tropical vacation.
