The only issue was the lack of diversity with encounters - everything was either Tentacool or Wingull, which ultimately made Repels necessary. I liked how open the set of water routes were though, and wish another game would do something like it

The problem with the sea is that 1) you constantly have to use repel, and you had to open the bag every time 2) you can't tell where the fuck you are going because of a lack of scene details, sea has just water and maybe a few rocks, so everything looks the same and you get lost

dive is a fun HM for exploration and going through the trenches blew my little mind as a kid
I always look forward to getting surf in pokemon games because it opens up so much to explore, but hoenn is absolutely the best in this regard

I never took an issue with it. I mean it traversing those routes could be a hassle but so were caves before so I never thought it was a particular problem of RSE.

I think the issue is that the water routes also happen to be where the game's plot becomes sort of a slog, but exploring the water routes and finding all the little secrets is fun on its own.

I always carry repels but even then the water trainers have incredibly boring team, a shame since I love how open the sea in hoenn is, having played it as a kid it felt endless and even now I like thoroughly going through it when I play the game

For a region with so much emphasis on land vs sea you'd think the ocean would be more diverse with it's Pokemon. Nope, just Tentacools and Wingull everywhere. It really doesn't help Team Aqua's case. Exploration was pretty interesting though, I miss when the games had so many optional areas. Just grab some repels prior so you're not stopped every 5 seconds.

RSE might have had too much water, but the ORAS criticism was a blown out meme because they literally scrunched up the water routes to be less desolate.
IGN is full of hacks that don't actually play the games they review.
Here's the only issues
>RS
absolutely ZERO postgame, literally the most barren in the series (sidequests maybe make up for this)
>Emerald
Fixed everything wrong with RS and more. Lots of postgame content. Bretty gud.
>ORAS
Poor man's Emerald. The delta episode was kino and all the new added content was nice, but it lacked a lot of the fluff Gen 3/4 games had that really made the whole experience seemed fleshed out. Hate what they did to the Game Corner and berry blender. Safari zone is eh and the games are way too easy.

I've never really seen this as a problem, the open ocean isn't exactly very abundant, it's more like a desert than a forest
lots more pokemon to see fishing on the coast or driving under the sea

Remake ocean was okay other than lack of minor details to act as markers like another anon said. Repels were definitely the move though, encounters were awful. The underwater was cool, wish there was more interesting things to explore though.

I still think they should've increased the diversity of the Pokemon to make the constant encounters more meaningful. The ocean is much bigger than a cave yet suffer from the same problem where you're always a few steps away from a random encounter. Even the desert area in Hoenn as short as it is has a pathway that's safe from random encounters. They just put trainers on it as a catch.

I don't hate having so many water routes as a concept. I just think they needed something to make it less monotonous. The entire appeal is exploration yet you're constantly getting stopped unless you bring repels with you.

I've personally always been of the mind that they should either get rid of fishing or surfing encounters. There's not much reason to have two different methods to catch such a similar set of Pokemon. All it does is make ocean encounters more repetitive because they want to keep some Pokemon exclusive to fishing.

One of the biggest issues I have with RSE is that it feels so much smaller than GSC. And I don't really mean with just "2 regions".

GSC worked so hard to craft a vibrant living world, and a massive postgame to explore, but in RSE once you beat the Elite 4 the bulk is done aside from wrapping up a few dungeons you might have missed before. Losing Day/Night really fucking hurt.

It is an issue, even more so for Sapphire/AS compared to the rest.
The reviewer could have worded the bullet point better but they did explain it well enough in the actual review. It truly was a shit meme from the start.

I liked all the water. The small islands you can find scattered throughout were kino. Underwater was also a great addition that set it apart from just being land except requiring surf. I think Hoenn had a good land:water ratio, other regions were always too flat and dry. I always found complaints about wild encounters retarded as fuck considering repels exist in the game for a reason.

The water routes are a massive pain in the ass and absolutely bring the game down.
Hoenn's water settlements are awesome though, the 2 coastal ones, sootopolis, pacifidlog, the one with the space station and ever grande are cool as fuck

The honestly deserved an even lower score. The awful world design was just one small piece of what makes these games so bad.
Ruby and Sapphire are essentially a straight downgrade to gold and silver, and are far uglier games to boot.

This, also the game could have done with a lot more exploration in the water routes. From the area between the seafloor cavern and pacifidlog, the only side locations on that long stretch are the sky pillar and the rare mirage island. That area made surfing a drag.
Adding more dive spots or hidden islands in addition to improved water encounter tables would have made the sea routes less monotonous.

Water needed to be a bit more spaced out. If the central area was bumped about 30 tiles to the east and traded place with the water, so that it was a distinct peninsula in the middle, a large starting island south west with a smaller island in the bottom corner, and then an archipelago to the east not as far from the middle area, it would be peak kino.

That or just fix water areas. Give us shallow areas with no encounters and deeper areas with encounters instead of being one unending cave, or mix up the mons. I can only care about so many tenticool.

This. You don't have to like how the Delta Episode played out, but it hit all the right spots for fans who grew up with the originals.
Compare that to Sword and Shield's postgame episodes. That literally is just a boss rush involving going to places you've already been to with little story or interactions.

no, it didn't, because what I liked about the originals was exploring to find things, not going through garbage ass cutscenes and a few piss easy battles.

That's literally what it was. Zinnia at least appears throughout the story, meanwhile the twins are literal who's and take you to the fucking gyms of all places instead of some upper-class part of Galar.
