3D models objectively can be used for more, and they can allow for a lot more interactivity and expressiveness.

Yes, but it's mostly because of two reasons... first, the 3D models used for pretty much all games are plain as fuck. Second, the way the animations are played makes them look really stiff, like you're watching two animatronics play simple routines.

Attacker is idle > attack 1 (physical) or attack 2 (special)

Defender is idle > hit taken > idle > faint

3D is better, GF just doesn't know how to animate 90% of them. Mr Mime's animation in 3D is better than it ever was in sprite days but most other mons just look so lifeless

Sprites beat models in aesthetics, but you can do allot more with models.

The shift to models isn't the problem though. It's GAMEFREAK. They don't know how to fucking use them compared to sprites. A more experienced dev would do 3D pokemon justice

Yes. even in nu-gen games.
Pokemon are drawn on paper first, and it's REALLY obvious that some of them were designed in 2D.

Some models were good, but some of them also didn't represent their pokemon very well (feraligatr and hippowdon
