They had a battle royale at the start just to filter all the shitters
Multiple competitors like Guzma, Kiawe, Gladion, and even Sophocles were very strong. Guzma completely trashes a Mega Kanghaskhan spamming Power Up Punch.
I can confidently say the SM team would beat the XY team. The only treat is Greninja and I highly doubt Greninja could do anything to Melmetal.

Honestly both Ash’s kalos and alola teams are Jobbers compared to his chad Sinnoh team (which due to technicalities, they as a TEAM haven’t actually lost in the Sinnoh league as Ash never used them in their entirety when fighting barring just Gible) especially considering that the last pokemon in his Sinnoh team Gible has put more work and actually got more solid Victories than either Noivern or Melmetal ever did. The only stain that team has is what happened to Torterra.
