I killed it on accident. I heard some say it's my only shot, others say I can try it again after the Elite 4. Which is true?

Unlike in later games such as Platinum and HeartGold/SoulSilver, there is no way to respawn a legendary if you flee from it or knock it out. Thus, in Diamond and Pearl, you only have one shot to catch each legendary Pokémon, and you must capture either Dialga or Palkia respectively to advance.

This isn't true despite the internet thinking so, I have on multiple occasions purposely killed Dialga/Palkia and reobtained them, you can find videos of this on youtube as well
