if you have to decide whether to watch a show at 5:30 or go to the store before it shuts, that's an actual active choice that you have to make. if you have to "decide" which of the 3000 shows on your hard drive to watch, in competition with posting on every thread in this site, reading one of every every article on wikipedia, etc etc etc, the level of choice available is so high that - perversely - it becomes almost impossible to make an active and informed choice and you fall back to doing things quite automatically. infinite scrolling indefinitely until it's time to go to bed.
