You know what? I don’t blame him for current Pokémon being dogshit. He put effort and soul into black/white just for it to be underappreciated. Every gen after that is low effort nostalgia pandering which as we can see is clearly making them big money.

I agree that BW2, although having the weaker story in some ways, was a much better game than BW1 due to the accessibility of pokemon, but i disagree that most gen 5 mons looked like utter shit. I personally like the majority of them, especially over the recent epidemic of trashmons that gf is shitting out in gens 7-8.

Whenever gen 5 is brought up, its main defenders talk about its story, and its main detractors talk about the pokemon, so I'm just pointing out the obvious conclusion. It doesn't help that they literally tried to do a "reboot" by having 151 entirely new mons and requiring you to only use them. Limiting to a regional dex worked for FrLg because of nostalgia but it's not going to work for 151 entirely new mons.
I mean I loved the Mursharna, Elektross, Prawniard, and lots of other lines, but the damn elemental monkeys did not need to exist. Ice cream and trash can pokemon are actually pretty fun ideas but they could have made them cuter or at least with less unnecessary circles and spikes. And don't get me started on having yet another set of box legendaries that are just generic fantasy dragons. I will never forgive DPPt for starting that trend

While I understand that you don't like some gen 5 mons, I really do like the majority of them, although I fucking hate trubbish's line. That being said, Zekrom is my favorite legendary and even if elemental dragons are boring, I still like it's design and respect the artists that made it.

B2W2 is based because I got to see new mons but ALSO actually have a game where I can catch a koffing early on. There's a ton of old pokemon that could have still had their time to shine.

With an entire new pokedex in BW1 I was HOPING they'd fix this but instead of coming up with interesting early game they shit the bed and gave us not-kanto

The truth is that nearly all massive franchises will inevitably return to its roots and pander to nostalgia. The combination of a massive earthquake damaging Japan's economy during BW's run and the next generation making the dangerous jump to 3D meant it was time for Gamefreak to use nostalgia as a safety net

BW sold extremely well, if there was any financial issue with that gen it was probably with the merch itself. A lot of Unova designs are obvious attempts to capture the popularity of previous popular mons, everyone talks about the Kanto knockoffs but also stuff like Zoroark = Lucario

In the Unova anime nearly everyone kept their Pokemon unevolved, backpedaling from Hoenn/Sinnoh. It's like the anime staff knew that they were dealing with some really questionable designs.

Box art legendaries in general were a huge fucking mistake even before gen 4, and I say this as someone that loves Ho oh and Lugia. Gen 1's starter designs are so good because they were designed for the box art, and by straying away from that the starters started looking worse and worse (gen 2 and 3's starters were ok, but chikorita and treecko's final forms look like fucking dogshit in comparison to their secondary forms) and legendaries became less special because you already know what they look like and expect the game to railroad you to them at some point in the story. Imagine if pokemon like Groudon, Kyogre, Dialga, Reshiram and Lugia were never revealed until you actually encountered them in game: it would have been magical for little kid me. I genuinely think that pokemon like the Regi trio are so fucking awesome because they were so well hidden and rarely shown off in other pokemedia, but the game designers just started shoving them in every game and ruining their mystique by telegraphing them to you and dumbing down their puzzles.

true, I just personally forgive gen 2 becasue the legendaries aren't railroaded into the plot, and gen 3 because when it was released I thought it was going to be a thing exclusive to that gen. Gen 4 cemented it as a trend for every gen after it to follow
