I got into competitive in gen 5 and started the series with gen 3, so i guess that playing more than 4-5 mainline games should be enough to get how competitive works. If there is someone who started playing in the 2D era, played all the games, but doesn't know type effectiveness charts, all the pokemon, and has an idea of how most stats and movepools are distributed, they are retarded.
