3=4<6. Gen 3 was a step backward from 2 in some ways - no visible(rse)/non-existent(frlg) day/night cycle, split the dex over too many games while axing backwards compatibility(that was a hardware limitation, but all the old mons should have been split between ruby and sapphire or at worst those + frlg and this is coming from someone who loves the gamecube games most out of the whole franchise and had a blast with emerald), it was the start of regions being complete ecological clusterfucks, and in moving away from Team Rocket they ended up with bad guys who's goals make no sense and that trend never left. But gen 3 got a lot right - secret bases gave us a much more custom space to make our own than decorating the same room in the same house everyone's game starts in and they let you add new trainers by mixing records, the battle system got many improvements like doubles and abilities, contests gave us another way to raise pokemon other than just for battling, and the exploration was very well done between routes with a few different paths and hidden things like the regis and dive spots. Gen 4 fixed some of gen 3's biggest problems, added the physical/special split, expanded on a lot of features, and finally gave us online now that we were on the ds. Gen 4 also had really shit online between the unusable gts and the need to still go to a pokemon center to connect, the limits on pal park were nonsense since it's already post-game, power creep was really becoming a problem, and a lot of their new mechanics like honey trees were poorly executed. 6 finally brought us to full 3d, gave us customization, had/still has great online, made most/all of the dex relatively attainable either in-game or through bank (while overpriced was definitely much better than catching 6 pokemon that already belong to you at a time either running around or with that stupid slingshot), and finally allowed us to interact with our pokemon with amie. 6 was also rushed/unfinished.
