Incineroar was never used in a battle after evolving, but Melmetal also has a new Gigantamax form to promote. He can probably just switch them in and out of his team; Dragonite and Gengar aren't doing much.

And as pointed out, Incineroar never battled, Lycanroc was in the end OP at the start of the series and Melmetal has a Gmax form to be shown off when they decide to pull that trigger. So the question remains, which of his old team returns?

Out of his Alola crew, Melmetal's a guarantee if they don't show its Gigantamax while they're still in Alola, and Incineroar has a very high chance since it never battled once since evolving.

We're only 37 episodes into this series. Misty appeared in AG in episode 44, May didn't appear in DP until ep 76, Dawn didn't appear in BW until 85 and Brock didn't appear until a post-series special. XY had no past traveling companions until Cilan met Clemont in a post-series special. Misty and Brock didn't return in SM until episode 42.

If we're talking about seeing older Pokemon, Ash first showed his older Pokemon in AG during episode 74, when he temporarily brought his Bulbasaur onto the team. DP didn't show off his older Pokemon until episode 182, for the League. Ash got Charizard after the Unova League, and his other Pokemon cameod in the finale. XY had no returning Pokemon, and some of his Pokemon cameo'd in the first Brock and Misty episode of SM.

Once the show re-establishes that they exist, they'll probably just randomly pop up in his team whenever the writers feel like using one, but stay at Alola the rest of the time.

I’d personally prefer if, in general, Ash used his team from whichever region he’s in and only call in the alumni for big battles, preferably mostly in the Pokémon League. But with the format change it’s hard to say how I feel about any of it. Still, something a little sad about the guys who never were part of one of his winning teams. Kinda like if you’ve got a sports team that wins it’s first title in forever and you remember the guys who’ve left who you wished were part of it. Pidgeot is the Ryne Sandberg of Ash’s team.

They explicitly mentioned Ash beat the Kanto Gym Leaders, and his past with Surge was focused on. We got clips of him seeing Ho-Oh. We got the Alola gang, his Alola Pokemon, Lillie's current whereabouts and Burnet and Kukui's baby. And this is on top of "vague hints," like implying Aura, and showing Ash's past achievements, trophies and gifts.

We've had more continuity here than any other series had at this point.
