People keep trying to critique it as though it's the same as other franchise entries, but it's basically the most different set of main line entries that exists. It needs to be discussed on its own merits rather than as part of the set. GSC are the only primary entries of a generation that does the kind of things that it does.
We call it Gen 2, but it's worthwhile to think of it as basically Pokemon: the Sequel. It attempts to take the existing material and add more world to it. It picks up plot from the first game and spins a follow-up story. Even BW2 isn't quite like this, because that all happens within the same generation, everything stays within Unova, and aside from side content, only concerns Unova.
