Why was the magnemite line the only one that had typing changes from gen 1 to gen 2? Other pokemon could've become either steel or dark

They should have changed a few things (they still should change a few things)

Victreebell would probably be a solid Grass/Dark choice.
And Cubone/Marowak really should be Ground/Ghost (not directly related, but still)

I don't oppose gen 1 shedding a few grass poisons but cubone and marrowak are not dead nor do they have ghostly traits

They're wearing and wielding bones, it's not a huge stretch with that aesthetic. A ghostly tweak to a pokedex entry would have been more than sufficient to justify them being ghost type. Obviously they realized it for Alolan Marowak.

raticate could’ve gotten away with normal/dark pretty easily. He didn’t even change much for the alolan that did just that. He just became darker and fatter.

Pitcher plants aren't poisonous.
And dark types aren't necessarily evil. Victreebell is certainly sinister, though, which is why dark would probably work for him.

The acid digestive acid motif works with the poison type, though, sure.

it's for Pokemon that are straight up evil. It's called the evil type in Japan for a reason.
Raticate for example is simply a normal rat that exaggerates the teeth. it's simply ordinary.
