This is a show about a children's card game that is actually based on ancient egyptian black magic - which makes it so hypnotically addictive that it ends up replacing all other forms of sport and entertainment.
Eventually yugioh duels start superceding the entire world econoy, and Kaiba shuts down the military industrial complex, to replace it with the yugioh card industrial complex, and becomes so absurdly rich as a result that he can build his own private satellite to research technology on how to transfer himself to ancient Egyptian heaven JUST to settle an old grudge with a pharaoah by challenging him to another match of a children's card game one last time.
For me most of the appeal is the sheer amount of over-the-top drama attached to what should be a really fucking boring premise. They constantly break the rules of their own game in more and more ridiculous way as the stakes reach the point of insanity (literally the first couple of episodes have somebody put in hospital for losing a card game, and then get his soul trapped, and it only gets more batshit from there).
The voice actors putting in such a stupid amount of effort, and the genuinely great soundtrack only elevate the whole thing even further.
It all culminates into insane, but iconic, moments like
