Im not against friendly rivals if they are implemented well like Barry is a friendly rival but he’s still competitive by nature and always wants to test himself by challenging you in unexpected moments which made the player always keep their guard up at all times and Cheran and Bianca are also friendly but their interactions were kept at a certain moderation so they don’t overstay their welcome and have decent teams so they aren’t complete pushovers (like Tierno and Trevor) whereas someone like Hau, Hop or the XY folk are either literal doormats and are pushovers in both characters (like Hau) or in battle (like shauna and Serena/Calam) or both (like Tierno and Trevor) or show up way too much to the point where it’s annoying as shit (like Hop for example who’s constant appearance in SWSH campaign ended up taking so much screen time that Bede and Marnie barely show up which ended hurting them as characters in the process).

Which is funny because both Bede and Marnie are better than Hop mostly because they're not as shit.
Bede at least has something resembling of an arc. Marnie is a nothing character but she at least doesn't get into an existencial crisis because she's not the very best ever right after beggining her journey which already makes her better than Hop.
