Hello /vp/, I'm considering buying Pokemon Shield soon (perhaps after 2nd DLC release).
what's everyone's thoughts on the pros/cons of gen 8, thoughts on story, how's the DLC, is dynamaxing a fun mechanic, etc.
also, am I making a good choice with Sh over Sw? I'm only basing it off version exclusives, incl. exclusive Gigantamax forms—is there anything else between versions I should know?
I hope everyone enjoys discussion

It’s one of the better gens tbqh. Only version differences are some pokemon(which you can easily get through wonder trades save for the box legendary) and a few gym leaders. Imo shield has the better exclusive trainers.

It's extremely easy to get mons up to comp level stats with hyper training, ability capsules, xp candies, nature mints and in the DLC discounted vitamins and the ability to Gmax anyone eligible. Also BP farming is easier since the Battle Tower is also easier.
Online is the same it's always been, no replays though. Visuals are pretty I guess.

bought sword in may 2020 during lockdown after i knew most of the internet drama about it.
the first impression was less bad than i expected.
after beating the story and playing it for about 100 hours without dlc i can say this is maybe the second or the second or third worst pokemon game i ever played.
it feels like a simplified downgrade compared to gen 7, its too short and too easy. the dex controversy, the annoying characters, cut content, bad animations and all this oile of lies and deception from the richest franchise on the planet has cemented my belief that game freak is not only lazy, but also incompetent and malicious.

cant recommend this game in clear conciousness. its a disappointment in most every regard and makes me glad i branched out to other games.

The ranking system is pretty eh imo but it's there.
The first 4 tiers are points-related rank ups until it becomes pic related with numbered placements that constantly updates every other second. The 2k-hundreds mark is where things get real

Exclusive doesn't matter as long as you get the online so you can receive any single pokemon you want, even better with shinies. The only thing you should really care about is whether you want to face the loli/Bara in Sword or Shota/Milf in Shield

I just came here to say SWOOSH has some fucking fun battles and I always come back to either make it to masters for the month or play a bunch of casuals.

Don't listen to people who only use cookie cutter teams it's possible to make it to masters and win 75% - 80% of the time with mono types teams after you learn the meta.

I just came off a casual match fighting a all legend team with a monotype was fun as fuck.

Personally felt like it had one of if not the weakest story out of any pokemon game to me.
Entirely based on "go fight the next gym" with little to no side stories in between, complete lack of a villain team, and then an extremely forced "antagonist" at the very very end of the game. Like there's even points where something interesting might happen but Leon shows up and tells you to fight the next gym while he handles it. The characters have more depth in little details than the overarching plot of the whole game. Never played pokemon expecting some good story but even this somehow managed to disappoint me.

Because other games had limitations on hardware they all had things i could find enjoyment in doing.
This one? Besides a gimmick wild area that honestly could had been done ages ago there is nothing left MP is shit due to timer being only 20m, low quality anymations and graphics, the dexit.
Lack of mini games.
I just can't find joy in it

I hadn't played a Pokemon game since Lets Go on release and I skipped USUM so that is probably why I didnt hate it. I was also in prison during Dexit and release so I missed all the negativity. I enjoyed it enough, it is certainly a lazy game but the fact you have access to so many Pokemon early on made it worthwhile and I like a lot of Gen 8 designs. Gf deserved everything it got though, they are an awful developer.

Is it true that this game breaks the Switch by saving? there was that rumor but I don't know if it is really true or not.

You can if they're available in the game. It's shit, but they're (((((((((fixing)))))))) that with DLCs. On the bright side, you can use (((((((legit)))))))) pokemon and receive hacked shinies on the wonder trade

SwSh has terrible graphics for a Switch game, and the campaign and region design overall are pretty lackluster. However, the Wild Area is a nice proof of concept, and I’ve just had a ton of fun playing doubles online.

They made some changes to how battle mechanics work like speed changes going into effect midturn, getting pokemon competitive-ready is much easier now through mints, bottle caps, and 4-5 perfect IVs from max raids, and dynamaxing is unironically a galaxy-brain mechanic that adds a lot of flavor and strategy into doubles.

I’ve gotten my money’s worth, and there’s still another DLC and a batch of mons re-entering the meta in a few months.

In the context of Doubles, Dynamax's field effects adds a lot into the turn by turn decision making without just being ungabunga sweep. While powerful, Dynamax itself is fairly straightforward with your only options being a single target nuke or a protect, so there's still a good amount of counterplay to it. It's also temporary so you absolutely don't want to just click and go, it's a resource you have to manage (yours and the opponent's).

Does anyone have any experience with the Yuzu emulator playing SwSh? I'm not feeling certain with the "okay" rating it has on the website. If it's better to just spend the money for Switch Lite & a physical, then I don't mind. I just got a gaming pc to play graphic heavy games but don't mind playing SwSh on it.

I do think Dynamax is a fun mechanic. There aren't version exclusive G-max forms anymore because Isle of Armor lets you make any Pokémon with a G-max able to G-max. Even before that, you could invite people with the other version to the exclusive raids so you could get the exclusive G-Max mons.

Max moves are strong, but not Z-move levels of retard strength. Each max move offers some sort of weather control, terrain control, or stat boost/debuff, which allows you to decide if you want to be offensive and nuke your opponents with strong SE attacks or be defensive and use dynamax to aid setting up or controlling the environment. The increased HP allows you to tank a SE that might’ve otherwise killed you, and coupled with Weakness Policy allows you to tank and hit back even harder, which changes how your sweeper can handle its checks and counters, and makes your opponents put a little more thought into how they need to dismantle your threats. You can decide to dynamax early to assist in wallbreaking, or you can save it for endgame to clean-up sweep. You can also counter-play dynamax with status (spore/yawn, paralysis) or max yourself and Max Protect to absorb the nukes.

Basically, it creates a lot of situational opportunities and considerations that keeps doubles matches interesting

That timer is only in VGC and BSS formats. 6v6 link battles don't have a general time limit, just one minute each turn to pick your move. If you're this ignorant about the multiplayer features you shouldn't be making criticisms.

Megas have some interesting ideas like making Sableye a powerful defensive presence, making Pidgeot a deadly SpA attacker and giving something like Beedrill some relevance but Dynamax is more interesting IMO as it is the more open-ended of the two, being a temporary super boost that anyone can use to create different situations and flip momentum instead of just a few permanent supermons to use as your team core (you see a Beedrill, Lopunny, Medicham or a Pinsir there is zero chance it's not a Mega and they're 100% gonna use it). The presence of stuff like Megamence and M-Kang also sours it a bit.

I don't think they're particularly well-balanced (most are too easy and straightforward and the AI teammates suck if you don't go online) but it's an alright enough pastime with good rewards. It also makes hunting easier with the date exploit as the mons come with good IVs and hidden abilities. Could be better overall but it's not so bad.

Ehh, I have mixed emotions on Max Raids. Some NPCs are absolute trash, and the Y-comm system that allows you to join other people’s raids is somehow still terrible, so it can be frustrating trying to get into a raid with others. However, completing a Max Raid is great because 4/5-star raid mons have 4/5 perfect IVs and catch rates are almost guaranteed even with pokeballs, so it’s great for getting competitive mons and balltism.

i would have liked to anwer that, but i usually never buy Dlc for any game. have not really looked at reviews yet but personally i cant support the concept of selling whole batches of classic pokemon data via a season pass. then again this seems to be the long term marketing strategy gf is going for so theres little help about it. if you happen to enjoy the base game for whatever reason or if you just dont care about the dex controversy it may be worth a consideration. i suspect the last couple hundread will be put in a seperate game. maybe those rumored gen 4 remakes.

The DLC wild area is a vast improvement from the base game, but it's still pretty barebones. The story is about 2 hours long and there's not much after that but competitive QoL and a few battles. The new moves in the DLC are pretty good too.

The single player is trash, as has been the fact for frankly the last 5 games of the series, but training shit, trading shit and battling online has been great and the DLC plus the story has a good number of charming and funny moments that make the "chore of beating the easy game so that you can access the resources to train your monsters" fairly bearable.
