That's Pokemon's marketing strength, that you don't need to follow the primary material, to be invested in it. Marvel does the same shit. What percentage of Marvel moviegoers do you think actively read the comics? I bet it's very small, and yet everyone knows the characters, kids buy the merch, and so forth and so on. Truly successful media franchises have attacks on multiple fronts, and make their main source material not technically necessary to be a part of the "fandom".
