Regardless of your opinions on these games when you look at it they had the last normal hype period for a pokemon game.
Let's run down all of the 3D games pre-release:
>XY(2013)-People excited pokemon's now 3D. People excited for new mechanics like mega evolution and a new type in 14 years.
>ORAS(2014)-People excited for hoenn remakes after begging since gen 5. Lots of new hoenn megas shown off to make people hype.
>SM(2016)-20th anniversary hype, new gen and region hype. Lots of new features shown off, alolan forms, Ultra beasts, z moves, totem pokemon, no gyms, and no hms. People were excited for this game. Even if people said they showed off too much, there wasn't a lot of negativity.
>USUM(2017)-People saying these games were going to be a cash grab. They barely anything at first so not a lot of people were interested. People arguing whether it's the same game, or they're just not showing enough. Everybody was more excited for pokemon on switch than this game.
>LGPE(2018)-People were mad this was another kanto remake, they thought it looked cheap, hated the go mechanics, and hated the game dumbing down the core mechanics. People arguing whether this is fine for casuals or that this is just a cash grab. Everybody is more interested in the 2019 title.
>SWSH(2019)-Initially had some hype(though not as strong as XY, ORAS, or SM) but the national dex cut made it one of the most controversial pre release seasons ever. I don't have to say what's already been said about this game.
>IOA, and CT DLC(2020)-People are arguing about whether this is scummy or not, rather than talk about the actual dlc, which just shows how little people care about it.
