USUM are by far the most excruciating games to replay. Even the first playthrough was rough due to nonstop cutscenes and increasingly contrived reasons for roadblocks.

I still like ORAS the best of the 3DS games. No battle frontier and no kyogre v groudon v fug scene was homo, but at least it had the correct hoenn champion. Combined with PSS, soaring (far less shit then ultra warp ride), dexnav, and delta episode; USUM can't compete. I can happily replay ORAS fequently, but ill never bother with a gen 7 again if i can help it.

After replaying Ultra Sun, I honestly feel like searching for certain low encounter rate wild pokemon is more exhausting than any of the cutscenes. Because of RNG, searching for certain pokemon can take up to 10 minutes, even worse if you're searching for something with a specific gender or ability. Meanwhile, the cutscenes for the most part are about 30 seconds to 1 minutes long at most excluding a few important ones. The only time I ver had an issue with cutscenes was soft resetting for a female popplio in SM, but that was fixed in USUM.

You know, I think you may be right.
6th gen was a complete shitshow
8th gen had lots of controversy
7th gen had lots of problems but probably stuff the average casual wouldn't mind because they just want the new pokemon game, and it had a lot of momentum because of pokemon go.
Also USUM came and went without much noise outside of communities centered around pokemon

Honestly yea. Human characters are a big selling point for Pokemon now and SM put the most effort into developing theirs (not a high bar but there you go), plus it has novelty points for scrapping gyms
