Trainers supposedly dedicating their lives to Pokemon battling? Basic ideas for what they want in a team but rarely ever use a more complicated strategy.
Here's an example; the first gym is rock in the new game again. Yay... until you realise that they've got a new-gen mon that unleashes a sandstorm turn 1. Then, the AI is smart enoguh to swap to another mon with sand rush or something similar, to really put the heat on the competitor. Then when that one gets knocked out, imagine a fucking Bug/Grass type gets sent out, testing how a trainer adapts to a new combat scenario they didn't expect, and look, they're wearing the Safety Goggles! Bug gets knocked out, and the first mon comes back out, re-establishing the sandstorm.
I don't expect comlicated battle strats from passerbys because they're just casual trainers in this world. But trainers that are supposed to test your mettle? They should prbably test your mettle. That's the change I want; nothing really for PvP, it's about the PvE experience
