Appropriating those two colors as grounds to hijack a character as your representative seems cheap and dishonest. I understand the idea is to want to be loved and embraced by a society that favors propagation, so taking icons people who otherwise wouldn't care about your cause or identity are silently persuaded to show how your lifestyle isn't too different but really what you're doing is bait-and-switch on the creator's behalf and using a character that isn't yours as a mouthpiece.
If you want good PR for your kind, fine but build that shit yourself proving it with actions and character of your own. Don't just be a dick and take beloved icons and say "See? This character's one of us. Don't you feel stupid?" It's not your character and the character's not your mouthpiece.
