The Orre games were seen as an odd novelty, I think being on Gamecube limited their attention somewhat. Competitively Gen 3 was the last "old-school" gen in that Smogon was very decentralized and didn't have all the weird bureaucracy it had today. One common variant rule I remember that was common was that in UU, you could use up to 2 BL mons and I'm a bit surprised no one has tried bringing that back since otherwise BL mons are essentially stuck in limbo.

It's a funny thing to think about today because Gen 3 matches could still drag out for quite a while compared to modern metas. Stall vs stall could end up with battles taking over 100 turns. I don't agree with that logic mind you, Gen 1 is my preferred old-ass meta of choice.
