18 types is maybe too much, but it is not as bad as just having 6 or 8. The ideal number should be around 12-15.

If someone didn't like spectrobes i can tell you it probably has nothing to do with that. Spectrobes battle system was really weak.

Nobody hated spectrobes besides Disney themselves. They also killed lilo and sitch which was arguably the most successful pokeclone ever.

Multiple and overlapping types add a sense of diversity, mystery and adventure to the experience. Especially when you don't know all the matchups or all the species.

What is really stupid is that they focus on fixing what they perceive as GF issues, but leave the type chart almost identical. Like why is rock weak against water in all those systems? Or wind weak to electricity? These could be reversed depending on how the creatures are themed. Example, a desert and a bird mon will be both weak to cold, but a wind and rock elemental would use their powers to insulate themselves.

Pokemon only has a few real elements.

>Normal (the non-elemental type)
>Fire
>Water
>Ice
>Electric
>Flying (Wind)
>Rock/Ground (different flavors of Earth)

The rest are vague, bullshit "make up your own rules" elements.

The worst offender is the aura sub type of fighting and dark. It should be Psychic or something.
So Ghost and Fairy are from different "dimensions", and psychic is like the supreme ascended type, ok, but Dark Pulse and Aura Sphere bare even less of a reasoning than even the above.

Lightning typically moves through the air with ease once it's grounded, and seeing how Flying covers for nearly all "wind"

That has nothing to do with why Spectrobes failed. It was the combat system in general being clunky and boring that messed it up for them, which is a shame because Spectrobes have damn good designs.

See, this is like an automated response in your part. No! Rocks are tough! It is how we build dams! Rocks erode under super strong jets after a looong time, where a "normal" beast would had immediately died. That is the logic behind the move Wide Guard.

But the point that I made is that the types in Pokemon work as Habitat types for those creatures, and as such it doesn't always make sense in other systems. A purely magical rock golem would resist water or at least be neutral.

Like what is it? Like physical push? like a gale of wind? Why is it Fighting type? It could be a Fighting exclusive move but typed differently. It is hard to really make sense of it when the "Mystic" types are barely defined themselves.

Rock/Ground/Steel are a mess.

Rock should be the Earth/Ceramic/Insulating type and Steel the Metallic/Conductive type. Counterparts.

This will make Ground more of a tough desert dusty Normal type, like in Gen 1. Claymons should just become low Defence Rock types. The issue with Ground is that design wise is about tough dusty Normal types, but type-wise it acts as a 2nd Rock type. If the tough-theme carries over to the type matchups it should now be:
>Neutral to Grass.
>Resist Fire.
>Weak to....? Ground? no
