It manages a sympathetic (if still janky) antagonist that has to be saved from themselves, very explicitly entangles our gang, gets in its cool set pieces, and has more deliberate Pokemon battles than the first two movies combined. It really helps that the featured Pokemon Shudo had to chose from aren't inherently intrusive, either; the Unown and Entei can be whatever you want them to be.
