Early-game Gyms are always total pushovers. And then you realize "wow there's a lot of Pokemon that fully evolve really quick/unevolved mons that make perfect aces". And then the planning and fun begins.
As for the whole Falinks thing in general, I imagine the Gym Leader gets more and more pissed as his team falls, before finally going mental and having a 'all or nothing' attitude, hence the No Retreat.
