Ash is literally the only successful trainer out of the four who started their journeys in EP001

The other two (the ones who picked Bulbasaur and Charmander) were stated by Oak in EP065 to have been unskilled and gave up on being trainers.

Then Gary quit after losing Ash in the Johto League to become a Researcher instead.

Ash is the only one of the four that's still a trainer.

Two literal whos I don't think ever got shown. All we know is that Ash woke up late and when he arrived at Oak's place the starters were already chosen by other people. He lost Squirtle to Gary. We do know that they were able to beat Brock and Misty's gyms. Misty's sisters say they lost a couple of times before Ash arrived.

God, I miss Gary. He was the funniest rival and made Ash actually shows more personality. I also really miss Brock. The anime was so good at the beginning...now it's unbearable trash.
