It's not. A good evolution keeps the most recognizable and unique features of the previous mon. Otherwise, why should it be connected via evolution? /vp/ was raised on Neo-Pokemon which very rarely actually does this, so they hate it.

Yes, the older gens violated this principle sometimes, but it's far more common with the newer gens. Learn to think in trends.

More often than not it's just because the developers are too lazy to come up with new designs.
It works sometimes on mons like Pidgey, but fails horribly with shit like Primeape or the gen 5 ice cream.

When the design is boring, it just stays boring. When it’s solid, it continues to be solid.

It can really go both ways, the main theme and motifs have to be really good. Like Solosis line. Unlike the Kline line.

Yet they’re still leagues better than the Pidgey line.
Pidgeot looks like gender difference than evolution. The line should’ve been only Pidgey > Pidgeot(with the female having Pidgeotto features)

In a vacuum there is nothing wrong with evolving into a larger version of itself, but ideally each and every pokemon should work as a unique stand alone design, as well as a stage in an evolutionary chain.
Pic related is one of my favorite examples, they all look unique, like they were designed apart from each other, yet they all work as a believable evolution family
