>>44887144I was into it pretty hardcore from gen 1 through gen 3. As much as I hated having to lose my team in the gen 2-3 transition, moving to the Gameboy Advanced some how justified it in my mind. Like we were moving into a new era or something.
Gen 4 started to lose me. While I really liked the games, they began getting bogged down too much in story and lore to the point where I started skipping cut scenes about half way through. I didn't feel like an adventure, as much as moving between scripted plot points. Stack on how slow the battle was and I remember really being sick of the games during my story run throughs.
The post games still had me though, and made the story slogs worth it. HGSS especially had 100's of hours to enjoy, you just had to get through those first 15 hours to get there. Same for gen 5 (even though I really liked that story and the more mature feeling lent itself well to a more strict jrpg story progression), and gen 6, while a noticeable decline, still had me on a casual level.
Gen 7 was the point where I couldn't find any redeeming qualities. The story was a slog from beginning to end, the world was a series of hallways being constantly harassed by my 'friends.' Who ever though stopping the game every 10 minutes to hear the brown kid exclaim how cool the grass looks needs to be ousted fucking yesterday.
Then there was the jump to Switch, but I don't really play video games much anymore, so I don't have a Switch. I could've bought one just for Sword and Shield, but... that game looks like a fucking train wreck. And worst of all, I couldn't bring my Porygon with me, who I've had since Sapphire. So I just decided to NOT get gen 8, and here I am... Replaying Gen 2, 3, and 5 every few months.
Guess I am become boomer.
