Surfing in DP and the bag when you have a lot of items were the only parts of Sinnoh that were very bad when it comes to speed. It is one of the slowest generations but yeah its exaggerated.

Gen IV isn't that slow, the speedrun times for HGSS and DPPt compared to Gen V/VI would have a larger variance if it was. Gen VII is what a slow pokemon game looks like.

It's a shame GameFreak nailed the speed with Gen 6 only to fuck it up in 7 somehow.

I never got the whole "gen 4 slow" complaint, as a kid I'd ride the mach bike everywhere in Ruby and probably had some form of ADHD but when I got Diamond I only noticed how slower it was the first time I played it and got used to it and didn't ever notice again

Is ~13 and ~27 minutes really that much? Then again you really don't know what you're saying if you think VI "nailed the speed" when it takes longer (2 minutes) to complete than IV. IF you can optimize a pokemon game and finish it in under 4 hours, it's fine. When USUM takes an extra 2+ hours to complete compared to the other games, you have a problem.

Is USUM's speed the main factor of that, or the cutscenes, though? i remember seeing a vid compiling all the cutscenes in USUM and it ended up being 6 hours long, kind of amazed the top speedrun got it beneath that

So then explain to me the point of the increased battle speed if the time gained is replaced by pointless and annoying cutscenes? The fact is you have no leg to stand on when claiming that Gen IV is "slow" when the supposed fast games take just as long to finish. Unless you want to argue that the "cutscenes" and forced stoppages really add something to the game, in which case I'd just have to laugh at the idea you find something useful from writing that wouldn't even make it into a basic childrens book. The speedrun times simply demonstrate that the so called slow overworld/battles really aren't that much of a factor when compared to Gen V, you'd see a much higher variance as Gen IV and V are fairly similar content-wise. I'm still willing to admit that GF could've made the games sharper, but overall the overworld and battle speed aren't anywhere near enough of a drag to be considered a valid criticism of gen IV. Especially when things like HM spam are far more detrimental to the game.

What always confused me was why it took so long to implement Gen 4's speed fixes. HGSS fixes a whole bunch by not checking the entire PC whenever you access it, avoiding the "saving a lot of data" issue, and changes the animations off mechanic to actually disable entry animations just like it did in Emerald. Why didn't Platinum implement these? Did they just not know it was annoying until the third time around?

Sinnoh is my favorite region but my biggest flaw with the game is still the speed.

it's just not a deal breaker is all, i just wish it was a bit faster. Other than that I guess the story was a bit more involved, but that's just how the gens 1-4 were.

Bit too much on the easy side but all Pokemon games are I guess
Big world tour after you beat the 6th gym to pad out the game was annoying, and Galactic felt like complete jokes besides Cyrus, was kind of annoyed the admins barely got any actual characterization or memorable moments

That's def the biggest gripe with the game, hms are always just this annoying thing that no one wants to deal with.

Weird thing about pokemon is that there's probably a romhack out there that fixes the games flaws.

Yeah, Renegade Platinum removes most of the trees/rocks.
I think the only HMs you need to clear the game are Strength (once), Waterfall, and Surf.

Yeah i misremembered because renegade plat was my most recent sinnoh experience.

I played standard plat and then romhack, it was pretty good. I don't think it's exactly a replacement but a fun new way to experience the region which is nice.

HMs obviously, although I feel like Rock Climb was sorely underutilised for hidden goodies, encounters, etc. I'm also something like 50/50 on the designs of the pokemon in the game, most of my favourite designs are just the new evolutions the game added. DP Flint is also fucking garbage.

Oh, and Lucas' outfit is lame as fuck. It's way better in Platinum but the hat is bothersome. If we could wear his contest outfit instead it'd dramatically improve the male option, otherwise you would only ever want to play as the female character due to her vastly superior design.
