Pretty sure the purple claws were a mistake since they're exclusive to the sprites. Everything else from that gen (the official art and the anime) and every future gen has the claws as black.

This. It's what happened from gen 1 to 3, which explains why some pokemon looked quite different in sprites

I always wondered this. It made so much more sense for Zangoose’s claws to be the same color as Seviper’s wounds. Seviper’s blade is red like Zangoose’s scars which they kept, so the claws become black is just a nonsense change.

Black claws just means Seviper is entirely scar tissue instead of just the purple streaks
