Gyms should only allow you to use pre-selected pokemon, or match the number of pokemon in your party.

i do the same autism in every pokemon game I play, i look up the gym leader on bulbapedia or such, and use the same amount of pokemon they use, it makes gym battles fun, and in some cases, harder.

pokemon has always been about being able to choose any 6 from the eight hundred nine pokemon. removing your choices is a bad idea because it teaches the player that the careful uniqueness of their own team means nothing especially if during the LlTERAL BOSS BATTLES.
it also makes the challenge of strategizing nerfed beyond all hell due to there being CLEAR good choices & inferior choices. because they weren't your CHOSEN pokemon & rather some random pokemon given out by the gym players haven't the emotional attachment that should encourage them to find a way to win with their bros even if they're weak.

Because they don't have to. That's literally it dude. The games will sell like fucking crazy no matter what just because they say "Pokemon". Shills won't care, kids won't care, casuals won't care. It isn't worth the programming time because it won't impact their fucking bank account noticeably at all. Shit gen 5 gave us a hard mode and those games sold worse than any other gen, that alone has told them that catering for difficulty is a complete fucking waste of time. It's over and done. This is how things will be forever and there isn't a single fucking thing we can do. You either have to take the games for what they are now or just get out of the franchise before it drives you fucking bonkers.

Ill prove you wrong, It's balanced because you have to face several trainers on the way to the champion.
The real problem is that you can run back to the pokemon center and the use items at any time.

Heres how I'd fix them.
If you want to challenge the gym, you must be forced to save before entering.
Save function is disable inside the gym.
No items are allowed by either side.
If all your pokemon faint, you lose all the progress into the gym.

Doing this and making the battles decently difficult would immediately make gyms a challenge. Though I would love a switch to doubles or pokemon limiting this is the correct answer.

I would also like to suggest non-held items being only able to be used inbetween gym fights and not during them. Also there can be actual lore reasons to back this up, regular trainer battles allow healing in battle because they're a more casual setting. Battling gym trainers and leaders is professional and so the healing items you would use for regular trainer battles would be disallowed. This can also be used for evil team grunts and leaders as why would dangerous criminals allow you to just pause the battle to heal your pokemon?

Why not just have a hard mode that forces all battles to follow battle stadium rules (normalize level, team preview, 3v3 or 4v4, item and species clause, etc.)? Then you can play through the game in doubles, challenge mode if you want while also keeping the normal mode available for kids or people who just want a fun casual experience.

If you could only save before entering the puzzles would probably be extremely annoying if you fail. Making the final battles more difficult and leaving other stuff unchanged would be able to increase the challenge without making the game more annoying in any way.

The problem with this is that this makes the game harder for the lowest common denominator but easier for anyone who actually needs the challenge.
Equalized levels would make the games easier in general for skilled players, because they don't have to worry as much about getting brute force steamrolled by an overleveled opponent. All equalized levels does is stop bad players from grinding to bypass the challenge entirely.
