Most passive walls. Take something like a Chansey for a prime example. One of the main reasons is that PP becomes much more of a problem, and it just flat out is boring spending an eternity to wear down every fodder NPC.

A lot of starter pokemon. A lot of fully evolved early route pokemon too. This list is massive honestly.

I guess a lot of stall/support/status pokemon, while good in game, are probably not as fun to use as the heavy hitters. Klefki and chansey come to mind.

You can beat the game with any pokemon
But I can say do not do a solo Forretress run. When your only offensive moves are Rapid Spin and Gyro Ball it'll be difficult to say the least.

I used the wording "among the best" instead of good for the sake of more interesting discussion. Everything is arguably pretty decent ingame.
Also doesn't 4tress have more attacks on that than level up? IIrc it gets bug bite and double edge at some point.

Skarm is pretty bad in game, and really good competitively, especially in old gens with it's shit learnset.

Chansey/Blissey are all really good in game, it's just that people in this thread are lazy and don't want to use them.

Any stallmons that rely on statuses because they're slow and don't onehitko random encounters and low tier NPCs. Also any pokemon that's fast with shit defense like Weavile, most likely because you don't have TMs/move tutors/egg moves that enable them to OHKO teams.

Also stuff that theoretically should be good, like dragon dance Haxorus, end up feeling like shit because they require way too much investment to get going since it's not tanky enough for late gen 5 bosses.

Slow frail mixed attackers in general.

I remember when Sun/Moon came out I spent an hour after getting surf trying to find Mareanie because I thought Toxapex looked cool from the leaks.
Found one and was immediately underwhelmed. My fault for expecting a tank to be worth using in-game.

Toxapex isn't a tank, it's a wall. A tank can take hits and dish them back. Tanks are amazing in playthroughs, walls are shit. That said, you're pretty correct about Toxapex being useless. I had SOME success in a playthrough using a Merciless one with Toxic and Venoshock, but it was more cute than anything and it was absolutely fucking helpless against anything immune to poison.
