Once all of the milktoast brand regulations went in full swing, it felt less like I was watching characters on a wacky journey ft. Pokemon and more like a bunch of corporate cardboard cutouts following a script.
The characters were written more like actual people as opposed to the overly safe, namby-pamby shit we see now. It wasn't great or groundbreaking by any means (it was still low effort Pokemon trash writing), but it was better than what we see now.
